It's Ok to Be an Artist... It's Ok to Be Me! emerged as a result of a statement that came out of my mouth surprising me a year ago. I said: "The only reason I became a fashion designer was because it wasn't ok to be an Artist." I clapped my hand over my mouth wondering where that came from. I has led me to paint & canvas. This piece shows a paintbrush where the handle is buried under fabric just as I have been. The bristles reveal an embryo of the desire, the tiny artist "baby" waiting to be born. The leaves and flowers depict how I am wanting to grow emerge, be all I am meant to be. I had also thought of calling this piece: Under all this fabric beats the heart of an Artist. Of course too wordy of a title.
The love of Art began for Denise as a child; drawing on anything and everything. After four years of Fashion Design study, she began creating Wearable Art and teaching workshops on fun, rebellious sewing techniques. Denise's Wearable Art Garments have exhibited worldwide with the Bernina & Fairfield Fashion Shows. Denise then discovered a new love: painting with acrylics. She says: "Being free to paint feels like a bird being let out of a cage." So she freed her parakeets and they fly free with her in "The Soaring Peacock Studio". There she also shares her love with children teaching them Art and encouraging them to explore their creativity.
